Are all the episodes based on books?

Since they cancelled the show I decided I had to read all the books :) ... well, let's be honest; I'd have read them anyway. It would just have taken me more time to get around to it. There are quite a few episodes I haven't seen because I  didn't like the show at first. I thought Lynley was stuck up and arrogant. I guess that makes me remotely similar to Havers ;) And by the time I warmed up to him, there were only aboout 4 eps left...

I'm currently reading "Playing for the ashes", which I haven't seen yet. The DVD arrived two days after I started the book, but so far I've managed to resist the temptation :P I've just watched "For the sake of Elena" three times instead ;)

No, I think just series 1 and 2 and maybe the first ep of series 3 are based on the books, and only loosely. Then I think the series became independent from the books, actually I see them as something completely different. ;)

Hi tinyniel,

like you, first I have read the books, and I did not liked IL in the series. After I have watched more EPs I have changed my mind and became a fan of the movies. As Jumaolster, I see it in a complete different way. but I think there are some more EPs which resembled the books.
:) :)

I always try and watch movies before I read the books, ever since The Beach disappointed me something so horribly. But I have to admit, that won't be a problem here. The show and books are so very different.

All the episodes after A Traitor to Memory are separate from the books. They didn't film A Place of Hiding, Elizabeth George speculates, because of the cost of production on the Isle of Guernsey.

I didn't start reading the books until after seeing the series, which might be either a blessing or a curse. Book Lynley reminds me too much of a cross between Dorothy Sayer's Peter Wimsey and P.D. James' Adam Dalgliesh. And then there are other things that an author can put in a book that can't be broadcast on prime time TV, most of which I would be happy to do without. Like the rest seem to have done, I've managed to view the books and the BBC series separately, so I've begun to enjoy both equally. Well, almost.
