Uhhh yep,
I have been laughing about this right the first time I've heard/seen this one:
Remember Lynley in "If Wishes were Horses", when within the lasts scenes he's talking to Dr. Jellicoe about her computer in her office at the hospital? He is saying something like "Do you know that the pages you visit on the internet leave a trace on your harddisk and it will remain there indelibly" (you folks in the UK may correct it to the exact wording)... now that's a nice thought - but let me tell you as a girl who's not a PC buff, but I know a little about our nice machines: NOPE!
Not at all in any case - let's say almost impossible. Yes, there are files that are being saved to the disk, but you can very easily remove them. There is a chance to recover them as all data, but that is a task which takes months to do. But hey, Havers just sits in front of Dr. Jellicoe's PC and upps starts the PC (not one single password that protects a PC of a DOCTOR in a hospital - excuse me?) and another uuups: there comes the internet page with the bomb installation guide for hobby terrorists.
Holy Cow! The magic of PC's and the Internet is described just beyond belief when it comes to our dear script-writers...
Cheerio
