sharethebeatlogoThis may come as very welcome news for our American members. Nat agreed to participate in this year’s Share the Beat event, which will be happening on September 23, 2006 in Sundance, Utah. This fundraiser will be held at the Sundance Resort. Confirmed stars so far are James Redford, Robert Redford, James Denton, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Nathaniel Parker, Ryan Merriman, Rivers Rutherford, Alana Grace and Bobby Joyner. The event supports the James Redford Institute for Transplant Awareness (JRI).

The fundraising event is designed to raise public awareness of the need for organ, tissue, marrow and blood donations, as well as much needed funds for educational outreach. Proceeds of this event go directly to public outreach and new media educational materials for families, high school and college students. The list of people waiting for transplants is constantly growing. In order to reduce the shortage of organs and tissues, there’s a need to build public awareness and acceptance of organ donation. The James Redford Institute strives to educate people, and in particular youth, about the miracle of transplantation.

jriThe James Redford Institute for Transplant Awareness (JRI), is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about the need for organ and tissue donation. The goal is to raise awareness of this issue through film, educational outreach, and on the Internet. Among the films produced by JRI are The Kindness of Strangers, an award-winning documentary that premiered on HBO, and Flow, a touching depiction of an encounter between a donor family member and a recipient which, along with the educational materials we have prepared, is currently in use by high schools and communities across the country. By focusing on the human/emotional side of donation, JRI tries to encourage people to become organ donors and to share this decision with their families. James Redford waited six months for the donor liver that saved his life. After his surgery, he launched the James Redford Institute for Transplant Awareness (JRI), a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about the need for organ and tissue donation.

coalsmlSome background info: Formed in 1992, The Coalition on Donation is a not-for-profit alliance of national organizations and local coalitions across the United States dedicated to inspiring all people to donate life through organ and tissue donation. The Coalition’s efforts focus on the life-saving aspects of donation and encourage people to take action now to ensure their donation wishes are carried out later. The Coalition does this with the national DONATE LIFE campaign, a comprehensive public education effort. Using public service advertising and public relations, the campaign has reached millions of Americans with the life-saving message of donation.
