bleak houseAccording to a poll on the favorite TV versions of Dickens' work released by BBC Worldwide and acclaimed drama Bleak House (2005) starring Gillian Anderson, Denis Lawson, Johnny Vegas and Nathaniel Parker came in first and beat other well-known Dickens adaptations including Martin Chuzzlewit, David Copperfield and Hard Times.

The poll was conducted to celebrate the release of the Charles Dickens 200th Anniversary Collection DVD set, published by BBC Worldwide on 30th January to mark the bi-centenary of Dickens' birth. The set contains poll favourite Bleak House as well as Little Dorrit, the BBC's adaptation of Oliver Twist and the most recent Great Expectations, shown on BBC One at Christmas.

As well as the Best TV adaptation, the poll also saw Gillian Anderson voted overwhelmingly as best actress in a Dickens programme for her roles across Great Expectations (as Miss Haversham) and Bleak House (as Lady Deadlock). Over a third of respondents chose the London-based actress as their favourite.
